Electrical Apprenticeship Algebra Practice: Solve and Check
Practice one original algebra example, check it by substitution, and learn how to spot a sign error before your next aptitude-study session.
Keep the equation balanced
Algebra practice is easier to check when you write one operation per line. An equation says that two expressions have the same value. Subtracting or adding a number on just one side changes that statement. Apply the same operation to both sides, then check the value of the unknown against the original equation. The check tests your answer against the question you were actually asked.
Try this original example
Solve 6x − 5 = 43. Think about which operation will undo the subtraction before looking at the next step. The goal is to isolate x while keeping both sides equal. This is a short worked sample for learning the method, not an official entrance-test question.
Work the steps and check
Add five to both sides: 6x = 48. Divide both sides by six: x = 8. Now substitute eight into the original equation: 6 times 8 minus 5 equals 48 minus 5, which equals 43. The two sides agree. If you had subtracted five instead of adding it, you would have found a value that fails this substitution check.
Use your mistake to choose the next practice
A missed problem gives you a useful question: did you misread the operation, change only one side, or make an arithmetic error? Write that reason beside your working. Try again without reading the solution, then attempt a different equation. Begin untimed so you can explain the steps. Use your chosen program's actual instructions when you later practice timing or calculator restrictions.
